Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi today sought World Bank (WB)'s sanction for the Rs 3900-crore World Bank-aided project, which envisages modernisation of irrigation systems in the state.

An official statement said that a team from the World Bank, led by the bank's country director Michael F Carter, today called on the chief minister at the Secretariat and discussed the progress of the ongoing World Bank-aided schemes in the state.

While thanking the World Bank's aid for the tsunami reconstruction project, Karunanidhi also sought a separate fund, from the already sanctioned money for tsunami housing reconstruction project, for building 20,000 concrete houses for the people who live within 200 metres from the shore in the state.

The bank officials agreed to consider the requests made by the chief minister, the statement added.

Besides Karunanidhi, ministers and secretaries from finance, electricity, local administration, public works, revenue, housing and social welfare departments participated in the discussion.
