The two-day workshop for finalising measures to realise the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) in Kochi has suggested an action plan for effectively implementing UMTA in the Greater Kochi region by the time the metro rail project is commissioned.

The workshop mainly proposed to set up an IT-enabled transportation monitoring and control system with seamless interchange between various modes of transport and single ticketing.

It proposed rationalising the transportation network, particularly bus and waterways network, establishing quality-monitoring standards for various transport operators in Kochi, and a programme for improving and repairing and maintaining avenues for promoting foot-travel and other forms of non-motorised transport like cycles.

The plan would be submitted to the government for approval, with the intention of having the UMTA system in place in Kochi in three years.
