Kolkata Dock System achieved a new high by handling an all-time monthly volume container traffic of 37, 213 TEUs in November. This is the highest traffic handled by the port since its inception in 1977, surpassing its previous record of the 34,287 TEUs in July 2009.
The growth rate in overall cargo handling peaked to 27 per cent in the last fiscal, the highest among the major ports in India. Growth in container trade climbed to as much as 21 per cent which is also the highest in India. Port circles are upbeat that if anything, the figures are a clear indicator that the management was never running out of ideas in tackling the congestion or other stifling factors that had created an unfavorable impression in the recent past.
