A high-level meeting presided over by chief minister V S Achuthanandan has decided to hand over the required land at the earliest to the engineering base being planned by Air India.

The decision comes a week after Air India chairman and managing director V Thulasidas announced here that work on the airline's engineering base would begin as soon as the state government handed over land for the purpose.

The land for the project would be in the vicinity of the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport , where the loss-making state government firm Trivandrum Rubber Works is currently located.

The Rubber Works land spread across 5.30 hectares. Air India has asked for 6.07 hectares of land for setting up its base.

This engineering base for Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which is to be set up by the AI subsidiary, Air India Engineering Services, would see AI's fleet of 737 aircraft operating out of Thiruvananthapuram.

The government added that trade union leaders who attended the meeting on behalf of the employees of the Rubber Works agreed to this decision and extended their support to the proposed AI base.
