Lok Pal: CVC to appear before Parliamentary panel on Sep 15

The Central Vigilance Commission will give its views to avoid overlapping of responsibilities with the proposed Lok Pal when it meets this week a Parliamentary panel considering suggestions for a stronger anti-corruption bill.

Sources said that the Commission will seek greater powers to prosecute higher bureaucracy in corruption related cases.

"There should be proper division of work between the CVC and Lok Pal. It is necessary that certain provisions are incorporated either in CVC or Lok Pal Act to check wrong practises in private sectors and political parties," a senior CVC official said requesting anonymity.

He said that there was a need to devise ways to check graft while executing deals in public-private partnership mode and seeking sanction for prosecution for senior government servants.

The Commission was earlier called in for making its presentation before the panel on September 7 but it was deferred by a week.

The Commission, comprising Central Vigilance Commissioner Pradeep Kumar and two of his deputies R Srikumar and J M Garg, will appear on September 15 before the House committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice.

"Among other things, the thrust of our suggestions would be that the powers of two bodies should not be made contradictory to hamper probe in corruption cases. We need certain changes in it," the official said.

The panel was formed in August to come out with a strong Lok Pal bill after taking into account proposals made by anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare and his team.

The country's top anti-corruption body has made a detailed presentation explaining the Commission's role in checking graft in government departments for the perusal of the panel.
