Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) is planning to further expand its wireless in local (WLL) network in Mumbai and New Delhi. A tender towards this effect will be floated soon, MTNL chairman and managing director S Rajagopalan said.

This is in line with MTNL's new drive to "get out of the copper age" and switch over to more reliable network. In addition, this would also come in handy when MTNL begins cellular operations next year.

MTNL is planning an additional 25,000 lines based on WLL technology in New Delhi, thus increasing the capacity to 50,000 lines within two months. In Mumbai, the tender would be floated for a whooping 50,000 lines. The tender would not specify the technology to be used for the WLL loop. Earlier, it had floated a tender for 25,000 lines for Delhi, for which the order has already been placed.
