MCC has taken several steps to curb the use of plastic. It has imposed a ban on plastic bags of below 40 micron. It has been carrying on repeated raids on shops selling or stocking plastic bags and seizing the stocks. Recently, the MCC premises was declared as plastic-free zone.
However, plastic cups, plates and plastic sheets continue to be used in hotels, eateries, choultries, hawkers and other places, resulting in environmental hazard and disposal problem. Plastic bags are freely made available in several shops, though supermarkets and major shops charge a rupee or two for a plastic bag.
MCC Commissioner C G Betsurmath said today that plastic bags of non-decaying variety were seen all over in the city. Besides affecting the beauty of the city, these bags were posing environmental and health hazards. The Ministry of Environment and Forests had banned use of plastic sachet for pan masala, gutka and tobacco under the Environmental (Protection) Act 1986 and rules.
In view of his, he warned hotels, bakeries, fancy stores, kalyana mantaps, hawkers and traders from using or stocking plastic. Besides seizing all such stocks, their trade licence would be cancelled, he cautioned.
