After enduring sweltering heat, people in North India might be in for some respite, as weather forecasters have predicted rains might hit the region from Sunday onwards or even earlier.

"Dust and thunderstorm, accompanied with squall, would occur at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its latest weather update. Private weather forecasting agency, Skymet seconded the claim.

It said a Western Disturbance is approaching Jammu and Kashmir, expected to give rain in the state on Saturday (May 30). By June 1, the weather system will touch Haryana, Delhi and adjoining areas like west Uttar Pradesh. The Western Disturbance is going to remain in the region till Wednesday, before weakening and clearing off. Maximum temperatures in North India have been regularly touching 45 degrees in recent days. The situation is equally bad in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where about 1,000 people have died in the heat.
