After Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh, Union Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes is all set to resign from his ministerial responsibilities ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
Congress sources said Fernandes too had been asked to resign from his minister’s post to concentrate on organisational work, after the Lok Sabha election dates were announced today.
According to one section of the party, he has already submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Fernandes, a Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka, was made the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Labour and Employment on October 24, 2006.
Despite being a minister, Fernandes, a close confidante of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, continues to be one of the general secretaries of the party.
