Poor standards hit floriculture growth

The floriculture sector was growing at 21% annually in India, but exports from the eastern and north-eastern states have not fared well because of as lack of awareness about standards, expoerts said at a seminar organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
Sector expert Utpal Banerjee said, "There is huge potential for floriculture, but certain standards and quality of cultivating flowers must be met.
West Bengal figures almost nowhere when it comes to exports and only caters to some states in the domestic market.
While flowers are cultivated and nurtured in the state, the four-five lean months specially during the rainy season and surging sales during the marriage and festive seasons means the flower market in Bengal belongs to the unorganised sector."
