Tripping of three 400 KV power lines between Chandrapur and Parali threw eastern suburbs of Mumbai and western parts of the state in dark for almost three hours.

R S Dutonde, chief public relation officer, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company, said, "Three lines between Chandrapur and Parali tripped today morning around 9.55 am which had its cascading effect on Parali-Solapur and Solapur-Lonikand lines and this caused power failure in the eastern suburbs, including Dombivli, Thane, Mulund, Bhandup and Navi Mumbai, and entire western Maharashtra and Marathwada."

The domestic and the international airports also faced a power failure for half-an-hour but operations were restored with the help of their own generator sets, sources said. However, Dutonde claimed that the supply was restored by 1.00 pm everywhere.

Pramod Deo, chairman, Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), said the power regulator will ask for a report from the state electricity board, Tatas and Reliance Energy.

"Once we get the report we will decide about our further course of action," he said.
