India is estimated to have produced a record of 233.87 million tonnes (MT) of foodgrains as per the fourth advance estimates for 2008-09 crop year, the government today said.
"Despite vicissitudes of weather, total foodgrain production increased from 230.77 MT in 2007-08 to 233.87 MT in 2008-09 as per the fourth advance estimates," Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas told Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
As the government is yet to release the fourth advance estimates of production of different crops during 2008-09, the crop-wise data could not be available.
According to the latest data, the government has achieved the targetted foodgrain production of 233 MT in 2008-09. The last record production of foodgrains was in 2007-08 (July-June).
The country's foodgrains production has increased by over 4 MT in the fourth advance estimate against 229.85 MT in the third advance estimates, which was released on May 8 this year.
