Pune-based Sakal Group today closed the Delhi operations of its recently launched English newspaper, Sakal Times, thereby terminating the services of 70-odd employees. Sakal Times was launched in May this year from Pune and was supposed to get a Delhi edition soon.
“The employees in Delhi were told six to eight weeks back that we will be winding up our Delhi operations soon. To my knowledge, this was communicated to the staff informally and they knew that their services will end soon. They will get whatever is due to them and their cheques have been despatched,” Sakal Managing Director Abhijit Pawar said. The 70-odd Delhi employees, on their part, said they were taken by surprise. They have constituted an action committee to protest the lock-out.
