The United States' decision to restrict outsourciong is not a temporary phenomenon and the current round of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations on opening up the services sector may not benefit India significantly if initial feelers are any indicator.

Senior government officials told Business Standard that in its offers to liberalise services, under the current round of the WTO negotiations, the US has not made any offers to open up outsourcing further.

It is, however, seeking enhanced market access for its retail firms in countries like India. "The US government has been seeking greater liberalisation measures from us on the services front which is primarily aimed at asking us to open up our retail trading sector," an Indian official said.

India, on its part, has decided to maintain restrictions in retail, audit and legal services as it views them as crucial sectors.
