An engineering college and hydro power institute is coming up at Tehri in the state.

Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde will lay foundation stone for the institute tomorrow in presence of Chief Minister BC Khanduri at Dibnu village in Tehri.

The institute will be built by Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC), a joint venture of the Central government and Uttar Pradesh.

The institute will run a four-year degree course as well as a diploma course in the hydro power engineering and construction.

A spokesman of the THDC said there will be four types of courses, which include a four-year BTech course in civil, electric and mechanical engineering. There will be 50 seats in this category.

THDC would also run a special four-year part-time BTech engineering in hydro power for its employees. For running hydro power stations, a specialised 6 to 9 month course is also being started, for which there will be 25 seats.

A PG diploma in hydro power course is also being envisaged in the institute with 20 seats.

THDC will spend Rs 15 crore in the first installment for building the institute.

Meanwhile, the state government has launched efforts to reserve some quota in the institute for students from Uttarakhand. “We would ask the Centre to reserve some seats for students of our state,” a top official said.
