Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Gujarat unit spokesman, Haren Pandya yesterday alleged that state Chief Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela was making indiscriminate use of official machinery to win the Radhanpur assembly by-elections.
Pandya said Radhanpur was all set to repeat the infamous Meham incident wherein the then Haryana Chief Minister, Omprakash Chautala, had allegedly misused official machinery to win the assembly election there. However, he expressed optimism that the BJP candidate, Shankarsinh Chaudhary, would emerge victorious.
Various factors like the withdrawal of support by the Congress to the Deve Gowda government at the Centre were in favour of the BJP, he said, adding that moreover the party candidate was from the other backward class community besides being a local of Radhanpur.
The BJP spokesman said that the failure of the Narmada project could also seal the fate of Vaghela as it is an emotional issue for the whole of Gujarat and particularly in drought-prone Radhanpur.
The president of the bjps gujarat unit of mahila morcha and mp, mrs anandiben patel, told pti that women were taking an active part in the election in the party's favour, and added that victory of the bjp candidate was a foregone conclusion.
