The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on Friday announced that its alumnus Anant Yardi has agreed to gift USD 10 million (Rs 75 crore) to the premier institute.

With the gift from Yardi, president and founder of Yardi Systems, IIT Delhi plans to set up laboratories and attract students and researchers to its newly established School of Artificial Intelligence (ScAI). The School of Artificial Intelligence was set up by the Institute for the express purpose of expanding opportunities for fundamental, and inter-disciplinary research, innovation and post-graduate education in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Data Science technologies.

According to IIT Delhi director V Ramgopal Rao, the gift will "catalyse cutting edge research in AI and related areas and propel" ScAI and IIT Delhi in their quest for building better solutions for the benefit of society, environment, industry and nation.

A key purpose of setting up ScAI is to not only develop and support the growth of AI researchers in the country, but also strengthen IIT Delhi’s place on the global AI map, said its founding head and IIT Delhi faculty Mausam. The school expects to hire at least 20 core faculty members in the coming years, seeking external partners in helping shape the school into a world class entity

"Artificial Intelligence technologies are driving global transformations, and playing a pivotal role in industrial, social and environmental change. We look forward to the ScAI strengthening education and research in AI, Machine Learning and Data Science, to enable commercial and societal applications," said Yardi.

The sixth such school for IIT Delhi, overall, ScAI will be broad in its research trajectories, and multi-disciplinary in its academic pursuits, the institute stated on Friday. Meanwhile, IIT Delhi will be holding its 52nd convocation on November 13, wherein 2117 graduating students will be awarded degrees with Fable CEO and IIT Delhi alumna Padmashree Warrior as the chief guest for the event.
