Bharatiya Janata Party’s effort to bag all the 11 Lok Sabha seats in Chhattisgarh failed as party one seat to retain the number of seats it had held in the 2009 elections.

Chief Minister Raman Singh had asserted that the BJP would win all the 11 seats in the 2014 general election. In the last Lok Sabha, the BJP had 10 members from Chhattisgarh. The party however failed accomplished the mission and could retain the number of constituencies it had in the last Lok Sabha.

Going by the national trend, the election result was also full of surprise in Chhattisgarh. Former Chief Minister and Congress stalwart Ajit Jogi lost the election in Mahasamund that stunned the political observers. Even union minister Charandas Mahant lost the election in Korba.

In Mahasamund, it was a close contest. Till 6 pm, the counting of votes continued that delayed the final results. Reports reaching from Mahasamund said that Jogi had demanded for recounting of votes as the margin was hardly 1000 votes.

The only seat that BJP lost was Durg from where party’s women wing national President Saroj Pandey was in the fray. Narendra Modi, whose charisma clicked party to power, came to Durg to campaign in favour of Pandey.

“Pandey’s defeat was due to personal reasons and could not be linked with Modi wave,” said political observer Dr Sushil Kumar Trivedi. The wave (Modi) was visible in Chhattisgarh as the party performed beyond expectation in Bilaspur, Sarguja and Bastar region, he added.

Chief Minister Raman Singh’s son Abhishek won Rajnandgaon with a comfortable margin of over 200,000 votes. Even BJP’s state chief Vishnudeo Sai won Raigarh with a huge margin of over 200,000 votes. In other constituencies also, margin of votes with which BJP candidates won was over 100,000.
