State-run Dena Bank will cover 1,000 villages over the next few years as part of its financial inclusion programme. The bank said it would appoint 1,300 banking correspondents, including retired army officers and school teachers, for the programme.

The bank will call for a Request For Proposal (RFP) for selecting a technical solution provider.

The programme would be suppored by ICT Smart Cards and bio-metric cards, said Chairman and Managing Director D L Rawal.

He was here to inaugurate the bank’s 1,248th branch at Tambaram, near Chennai.

“These correspondents could be kirana shop owners, retired army officers and school teachers, among others. They will be appointed in the unbanked areas. During the current year, the bank will appoint 800 correspondents.
