One day National Dialogue on Gender parity in media and entertainment sectordiscusses limiting factors for women in M & E sector Female artists should be groomed to take up non-conventional roles say experts from media and entertainment industry A National Dialogue on An equal space: Gender parity in media and entertainment sector was held in New Delhi today. The event was organized by the National Commission for Women (NCW) in partnership with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and ASSOCHAM. The NCW, which is an apex statutory body constituted to safeguard the legal and Constitutional rights of women, organized the dialogue to suggest policies and programmes for addressing limiting factors for women in the entertainment and media sector., parity and ownership in the creative and decision making domains. Inaugurating the session, the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Prakash Javadekar expressed happiness that such a dialogue is being organized to discuss the issues related to gender parity in media and entertainment industry. He said that the world has lost a lot by not giving women equal opportunities and not recognizing their talent. He said that the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech last year had raised this issue of gender disparity. The Minister emphasized that the women have qualities like compassion, conviction, consistency and courage which are their unique strength. There is no difference between men and women in terms of capabilities and men need to be sensitized regarding their attitude towards women, he added. Chairperson, NCW, Smt Lalitha Kumara mangalam said that even today an invisible barrier exists in the media and entertainment industry, where women do not get equal opportunities. She explained that various factors like lack of training and lack of family support are responsible for this situation. The percentage of women working in this sector is also very low. Even today people do not find this sector as a good place to work, she added. Eminent filmmaker Ramesh Sippy opined that women should be portrayed as empowered characters in the films to send the right message to the society. Female artists should be encouraged to participate in non-conventional roles in films which helps to eliminate misconception of the entertainment industry being projected as biased, he added. The inaugural session was followed by technical sessions. The deliberations were held on various issues such as Equal opportunity for women in Media and entertainment, Enabling and empowering women at Media &Entertainment workplace and Skilling and capacity building. The experts also had question-answer session with the audience present on the occasion. During the deliberations,stress was laid on various issues like proper grooming and training of females in various non-conventional roles in the industry. The participants felt that technology and digitization has changed the scenario eg now equipments are light- weight as compared to the earlier times and women are entering into various roles like make-up artists, stuntwomen etc. The news industry has much more presence of women as compared to their male counterparts, the participants opined but a lot needs to be done to encourage women to join this sector and establish themselves into the system. Eminent personalities related to the media and entertainment industry like film maker Ramesh Sippy, actor and director Rajat Kapoor, actress Divya Dutta and Rajeshwari Sachdev also participated in the seminar. Senior Advocate and Additional Solicitor General of India, Ms Pinky Anand, DG, IIMC Shri Sunit Tandon, Ex Director (Films) Ministry of I&B Ms Nirupama Kotru, MD, NFDC Nina Lath Gupta, and senior journalist Rahul Kanwal, other eminent experts in the field of media and entertainment sector were panelists in the discussion.
