Performance in International Sports Events

The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Sarbananda Sonowal has said that the details of achievements of sportspersons and teams of the country in terms of medals won, sports discipline-wise, in Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 and Incheon Asian Games 2014 are given in Annexure. Sportspersons from the country did not win any medal in FIG Artistic Gymnastics, 45th World Championship held in Nanning, China from 3rd to 12th October 2014.

 
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today Shri Sonowal said, the review of performance of the sportspersons and teams of the country in international sports events by the Government as well as National Sports Federations is an ongoing exercise, Coaching camps, customized training within the country and abroad with scientific back-up, competition exposures and engagement of foreign coaches are planned accordingly for improving the performance of Indian sportspersons and teams in international sports events including forthcoming Rio Olympic Games 2016.
 
The Minister further said, in order to support Indias best medal prospects for 2016 and 2020 Olympics and other major sporting events up to 2020 Olympics, the Ministry has started a Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOP Scheme) promoted by the National Sports Development Fund. An Elite Athletes Identification Committee has been set up under the chairpersonship of Shri Anurag Thakur, Member of Parliament and having Shri Rahul Dravid, Shri Pullella Gopichand, Shri Abhinav Bindra and Ms. Manisha Malhotra as members among others to evaluate and select talented potential medal prospects for 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games for support under the TOP Scheme; Focused disciplines will be Athletics, Archery, Badminton, Boxing, Wrestling and Shooting.
 
Shri Sonowal said, to improve the performance of Indian sportsperson/ teams in International Level Sports competitions including forthcoming Olympic Games, reputed Indian/ foreign coaches/ experts have already been appointed/ engaged as per the specific requirements. At present, 19 foreign coaches in 10 disciplines are engaged. Discipline-wise break-up of foreign coaches engaged is as under:
 
Archery-1, Atheletics-3, Badminton-1, Boxing-2, Hockey-1, Kayaking & Canoeing-1, Shooting-5, Squash-1, Wrestling-3 and Yachting-1.
