WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange today lost his appeal against extradition from the UK to Sweden to face charges of rape and sexual assault in that country.

Two judges at the High Court in London said that a ruling in favour of extradition must be upheld.

Assange, 40, denies Swedish allegations that he raped one woman and sexually molested and coerced another in the Swedish capital Stockholm last year.

Assange's lawyers had argued that his removal from Britain would be "unfair and unlawful".

He can now apply to take the case to the Supreme Court.

Assange, an Australian national, was arrested in Britain in December last year.
