On Thursday, when Narendra Modi was filing his nomination papers from the holy city of Varanasi, mediapersons were not allowed inside the returning officer's room. Manish Khattry, a supporter of Narendra Modi, managed to gain entry into the room and was later designated the official photographer of the submission. Manish uploaded the photo on his Facebook page and on Friday, Facebook Newswire picked up the photo and it soon went viral.

Facebook Newswire, a tool which could play a crucial role alongside conventional journalistic practices in the coming years, is developed by the Menlo Park — headquartered company to aggregate newsworthy contents and put these together into a page, created specifically for sharing news content. The company is yet to decide on region-specific pages. If created, it could challenge media houses, which run their own websites, since Newswire could emerge as a convenient option for Facebook users.

“Powered by Storyful, the leader in social content discovery and verification for newsrooms, FB Newswire aggregates newsworthy content shared publicly on Facebook by individuals and organisations across the world for journalists to use in their reporting. This will include original photos, videos and status updates posted by people on the front lines of major events such as protests, elections and sporting events,” Andy Mitchell, director, News and Global Media Partnership at Facebook, wrote in his blog.

But the firm is yet to chart out its plans, despite having garnered more than 18,000 likes since its launch and has been steadily climbing the ranks.

In addition, Newswire has also managed to share content on Ukraine crisis, White House, ferry crash in South Korea and a fire in Delhi’s own Vasant Kunj. “It is too early to comment on region-specific expansion. Facebook is a forum where content can be shared and our idea is to make the world more open-ended and connected,” said a spokesperson of Facebook India.

Facebook has more than 100 million users in India and content shared on the Facebook pages of any company or individual could be available on Newswire. Facebook accounted for 17.5 per cent of the $18 billion spent on mobile ads worldwide last year, compared with a 49.3 per cent share for Google, according to the research firm eMarketer. This year, eMarketer predicted, advertisers would spend much more on mobile ads - nearly $32 billion globally - and Facebook would take 21.7 per cent of the market. Google's share is expected to drop to 47 per cent.
