Syria: US urges China to play positive role in UNSC

Secretary of State John Kerry has urged China to play a positive role in the UN Security Council on Syria.

The move comes after Kerry acknowledged a sharp disagreement with China over how the international community should respond to the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

China has strongly opposed strikes on Syria by the United States or its allies in response to chemical weapons attack on August 21 near Damascus that US has blamed on government forces.

According to Fox News, in the UNSC, where China holds veto power, it has joined with Russia in opposing action against Syria.

Kerry spoke at the State Department before a meeting and working lunch with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Yi has reiterated the need for political talks to end the violence in Syria that has killed an estimated 100,000 people and displaced 2 million more.

Kerry said that he appreciated China's support for a political solution, but the West does have differences with Syria and have disagreed sharply over how the international community should respond to the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons, the report said.

He said that with negotiations ongoing at the Security Council, he look forward to China playing a positive, constructive, important role.

Kerry is seeking support from China for strong resolutions to implement an agreement forged by the U.S. and Russia to put Syria's chemical weapons under international supervision.
