Typhoon Nida has hit the coast of the Chinese territory of Hong Kong and residents were advised to stay away from waterways in case they flood, the media said on Monday.

People living in Guangdong province in southern China were warned to stockpile food and other essentials, BBC reported.

Typhoon Nida, which passed over the Philippines, is set to be the strongest typhoon in the region since 1983.

Hundreds of thousands of passengers were affected as trains, ferries and planes were cancelled.

Thousands of workers have been evacuated from an offshore oil platform and from a series of tunnels and bridges that are being built to link Hong Kong with two other cities.
