The Yale school of Management (Yale SOM) will kick-start its first-ever international experience programme with a study group scheduled to visit India in early 2007.

The school's international experience programme, a mandatory component of the school's new MBA curriculum, was launched in September, 2006.

Paul Bracken, Professor of Management and Political Science who will lead the trip to India said, "As a manager, you can't only focus on fixing a problem that's in front of you; you must also be able to identify opportunities and in that context India is the perfect place to illustrate to students how to see and take advantage of business opportunities."

The students will travel to Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi. Scheduled meetings include: Kamal Nath, Minister of Industry and Commerce for a discussion on India's economic development and its place in the global economy; ChrysCapital and Thomas Weisel India Opportunity Fund to learn how private equity firms see the strategic impact of India; Procter & Gamble to study how a major U.S.-based company operates in a different market; Target Corporation for a discussion of cross-border joint ventures and business processing; Yahoo! for insight on accelerated learning across countries; and Lea Consulting for an examination of transportation bottleneck issues.

The Students will also visit the film industry in Mumbai to study its dynamics.

"For a number of years, Yale SOM has had a number of very popular student-organised trips abroad, but the faculty felt that it was important to make the International Experience a formal requirement of our program," said Joel M.

Podolny, Dean of the Yale School of Management. "The new curriculum is based on the idea of being adept at working across boundaries, including geographic, cultural, and political boundaries, so it was very intuitive for us to make this a part of thecurriculum."
