The average daily volume in A group stocks in the first eight trading days of the current month has jumped 13.13 per cent compared with the corresponding period in July 2002. This when the total volume on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) has declined by 39.84 per cent.

This is because investors are no longer queueing up for small-cap and mid-cap stocks and are eyeing the top listings in these segments. The average volume in B1 stocks declined by 71.94 per cent, while in B2 stocks it fell 90.86 per cent.
