The Sensex opened 12 points higher at 9,397, touched a high of 9,436, and then slipped into the negative zone. The index has slipped deeper into red and is now down 192 points at 9,194.
ICICI Bank has plunged over 7% to Rs 367. HDFC has slumped 5% to Rs 1,480, and HDFC Bank has tumbled 4.7% to Rs 964.
Satyam has shed 3.7% at Rs 252. Jaiprakash Associates has slipped nearly 3% to Rs 71.
DLF and Infosys have dropped 2.7% each to Rs 234 and Rs 1,186, respectively.
ACC and Reliance Infrastructure have declined over 2% each to Rs 409 and Rs 505, respectively.
Hindalco and Larsen & Toubro are down 1.7% each at Rs 56 and Rs 778, respectively.
Mahindra & Mahindra, however, is up 1% at Rs 334.
