The Sensex opened 44 points higher at 16,893 on the back of positive global cues. The index soon crossed the 17,000-mark, and is now up 154 points at 17,003.
The Nifty is now up 48 points at 5,047.
DLF and Sterlite have surged 2.5% each to Rs 378 and Rs 857, respectively.
Maruti, Mahindra & Mahindra and SBI have rallied over 2% each to Rs 1,513, Rs 1,052 and Rs 2,349, respectively.
Tata Steel, Tata Motors and Jaiprakash Associates have advanced nearly 2% each to Rs 531, Rs 631 and Rs 236, respectively.
Hero Honda and Tata Power have gained 1.5% each at Rs 1,604 and Rs 1,347, respectively.
ICICI Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance and Hindalco are also up over 1% each.
TCS and Wipro, however, are down around 1% each to Rs 663 and Rs 627, respectively.
