2G case: Former PM Manmohan Singh was misled by A.Raja, CBI tells SC

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday told the Special Court that former prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was misled by his telecom minister A.Raja in connection with the allocation of 2G spectrum to prospective bidders.

It told the court that Raja had deliberately advanced the cut off date to favour accused firms in 2G allocation, and added that 2G spectrum was granted to "ineligible" companies like Swan Telecom Pvt Ltd and Unitech Wireless (Tamil Nadu) Ltd.

The CBI made these charges during the final arguments in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case.

In its charge sheet, the CBI had alleged that there was a loss of Rs.30,984 crore to the exchequer in allocation of 122 licences for 2G spectrum which were scrapped by the Supreme Court on February 2, 2012.

The Supreme Court had earlier this month stayed the summons to the former prime minister and five others by a trial court over the coal scam. The apex court also issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), asking it to file a response in three weeks.

Dr. Singh had earlier on March 25 filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the summons issued to him by a trial court in connection with the coal blocks allocation scam.

Upset over the summons issued to him, the former prime minister had also stated he was sure that the truth would prevail in the matter.

A special CBI court in Delhi had summoned the former prime minister, former coal secretary P.C. Parakh, industrialist Kumar Manglam Birla and three others in the coal blocks allocation case on March 11.

The court summoned them on alleged charges of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
