33 pc pedestrians too busy on phones to be careful on road

A new survey has revealed that one third pedestrians are so engrossed with their smartphones that they step onto a busy road without looking.

According to the survey by Confused.com, nearly a third admit that their mobile phone has distracted them from looking for traffic on the roads, with two thirds blaming texting and three fifths blaming speaking on the phone Just under a quarter said they had been looking up their Facebook messages, the Daily Express reported.

It was also found that just under a fifth sending messages via WhatsApp, over an eighth had been checking their emails and three per cent even took selfies.

The survey also found that seven out of ten young adults aged up to 24 admit using their mobile phones while walking compared to just three in 10 of those aged 55 and over.
