At least five people, including a policeman, died and 22 others were wounded after a hijacked bus ploughed into pedestrians in Longyan city in southeastern China's Fujian Province on Tuesday.
According to the city government, the mishap took place at around 3:20 pm (local time), while the wounded, including one with serious injuries, were rushed to local hospitals for immediate medical treatment, China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.
An eyewitness said that the suspect, carrying a knife, had hijacked the bus and intentionally tried to mow down the pedestrians for 300-400 metres.
The police sealed off the area and detained the suspect, who is now in custody. An investigation by the authorities suspected the mishap to be a criminal case.
Further investigation in the matter is underway.
