The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had played politics over the issue of power tariff in Delhi, despite being aware of its functioning, and added that the Arvind Kejriwal-led party should take action now to ensure that tariffs are halved, as they had promised.

"All this was known to the AAP that how the functioning goes on and despite that why don't they take action to see to it that the power tariff is halved, they played politics over the power tariff and today we are seeing that Delhi is going to have an increase in the power tariff. It is shocking," BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told ANI.

"It's astonishing that the AAP, which had formed government in Delhi claiming that it would halve the power tariffs today says that it is helpless and can do nothing except that it would oppose the DERC charge," he added.

Consumers of BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL), which control 70% of Delhi's total area will face hike in electricity bills after Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) hiked the power tariff by up to 6%.

People using electricity provided by Tata Power will have to pay 4% more while those in NDMC area will have to pay 5% more.

According to reports, the AAP has decided to oppose the DERC decision and may challenge the decision in court.
