Congress leader Manish Tewari on Saturday described the abolition of Groups of Ministers (GoM) and Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) as an internal matter of the Union Government.

"It is the prerogative of every government to run the state the way they want. The Prime Minister has chosen to abolish to a GOM and EGOM; it is their internal matter. But I would like to respectfully point out that the GOM and the EGOM were constituted during UPA rule. They have inter ministerial connotations and it became a kind of a single window system for speedy and sorted decisions with exchange of ideas within ministers from different sections," Tewari said.

Earlier, in the day in a major move aimed at empowering the ministries and departments, Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to abolish all the existing nine Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoMs) and twenty-one Groups of Ministers (GoMs).

According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, the government is of the view that the abolishing of GoMs and EGoMs would expedite the process of decision making and usher in greater accountability in the system.

The ministries and departments will now process the issues pending before the EGoMs and GoMs and take appropriate decisions at the level of ministries and departments itself.

Wherever the Ministries face any difficulties, the Cabinet Secretariat and the Prime Minister's Office will facilitate the decision making process, the PIB release said.
