American Peter Uihlein 'narrowly' misses 'magic 59' in Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

American golfer Peter Uihlein has reportedly missed his chance to score the first 59 in European Tour history in the second round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, and had to settle for a course record-equalling 60.

Uihlein narrowly missed a long eagle putt on his final hole, which was the par-five ninth at the Kingsbarns golf course, and his 12 under par round left him 13 under for the tournament, two shots off tournament leader, England's Tom Lewis.

According to the BBC, Uihlein, who is hoping to emulate South Africa's Branden Grace's shooting 60 on the same course last year and winning the tournament, expressed his disappointment at the near-miss, saying that although he thought that he hit a good putt, it however, went to the left and made him lose the chance to score a 'magical' 59.

The report mentioned that Uihlein's compatriot Jim Furyk shot the sixth 59 on the US PGA Tour in the BMW Championship.

Meanwhile, the report further said that Lewis, who shot 65 in the tournament to follow his opening 64 and reach 15 under par, is one shot ahead of Joost Luiten of the Netherlands, with English quartet Tommy Fleetwood, Mark Foster, Oliver Wilson, Richard McEvoy and South African Hennie Otto sharing third with Uihlein.

The Alfred Dunhill is a pro-am event in which players alternate between three courses over the first three days, before the top 20 compete at St Andrews on Sunday, the report added.
