Netherlands winger Arjen Robben has backed Louis van Gaal to turn Manchester United into champions again, as the Dutch manager has been handed the task of rebuilding the Old Trafford outfit following their dramatic fall from grace.
Van Gaal replaced David Moyes in the summer but has suffered a difficult start to his Old Trafford reign. United have won just one game so far this season and crashed out of the Capital One Cup to League One minnows MK Dons.
The Dutchman has spent almost 160 million pounds on star signings this summer and the pressure on him to succeed is massive. But Robben is convinced that Van Gaal is the man for the job, the Daily Star reported.
Robben, who played under Van Gaal for both Netherlands and Bayern Munich, said that he has not spoken to the Dutchman recently, but he was very happy for him that he won the game against Queens Park Rangers.
Robben said that hopefully now Van Gaal can show that he will do very well, but he needs time. He said that he knows how it works; if one is not winning, he gets the pressure; but, the winger added that the management at United know what sort of coach they have got.
The Bayern winger said that he is very confident Van Gaal would be successful there, adding that he has worked with the Dutchman, so he has known him for a very long time.
Robben said that Van Gaal is one of the few coaches, he thinks, who can make teams play better, adding that the Dutchman makes players better.
Robben also said that Van Gaal will get United back into the Champions League next season, where they belong.
