Denying that the recent floods in Jammu and Kashmir had affected security along the Line of Control (LoC), Lieutenant General KH Singh on Sunday said that the army was fully prepared to deal with the infiltrators.
"The fencing of the LoC is around 300 kilometres long, of which perhaps an aggregate total of only five kilometres has been affected by the flood. If they try, they will pay for it," Lieutenant General Singh told a press conference here.
Talking about the rescue operations that the army has been undertaking, he said, "Approximately 3,000 marooned people were evacuated, given shelter, given medical help where required and given food and water at various camps of the army. The number of such camps was 10, which has now come down to eight because some people have gone back to their villages."
Lieutenant General Singh further said that around 1400-1500 people are under the care of the army.
"The army has so far recovered 52 dead bodies, which includes people who were killed in the recent bus accident," he added.
Incessant rains resulting in mud slides, flash floods and rising of water level in all rivers of Jammu and Kashmir have left thousands of people stranded across the state.
The floods have affected 2,325 villages, of which, nearly 350 have been submerged. Rescue and relief operations are going on in full swing.
