Former German football great Franz Beckenbauer has admitted that the committee chaired by him during the bidding process for the 2006 World Cup 'went to the limits'.

Beckenbauer had earlier admitted that he made a mistake in the bidding process for the 2006 World Cup.

The 70-year-old revealed that there was no ethics commission in FIFA and they could contact the executive committee of the world's football governing body directly.

According to Sport24, the scandal was pertaining to a hefty payment of 7.2 million dollars made by Germany Football Association in order to purchase the votes of the FIFA's executive committee to win the rights to host the 2006 World Cup.

Reflecting on the matter, Beckenbauer said the money was proposed to obtain 250 million euros grant from FIFA.

Beckenbauer also reacted to the claims that he signed numerous documents linked to the 2006 World Cup without reading them. He admitted that he signed it as he had full faith on them.

Earlier, the FIFA Ethics Committee had opened an investigation against Beckenbauer and Spain's retired footballer Angel Maria Villar over alleged charges of misconduct.
