Students of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on Thursday clashed with the Uttar Pradesh Police, leaving a number of people in both parties injured. The students were reportedly demanding the restoration of the students union instead of fresh elections being held for the students' council.
The demonstrators staged a protest at the BHU campus and the main gate. According to reports, when the state police tried to remove them, the students went out of control and started pelting stones. As a result, the police had to resort to a lathi charge and also fired rubber bullets.
In the clashes, two vehicles were set on fire by the students, while several others were vandalised.
