The gangrape of a nurse, who had treated December 16 gangrape victim Nirbhaya, has been condemned by leaders in no uncertain terms. They have called for strict action against the culprits involved.

"This is a matter of grave concern. She is not only Nirbhaya's nurse , she is a nurse, she is a women and I believe such kind of behaviour towards women is not only deplorable but this is something beyond contemplation. Strictest action should be taken against those who have done this to the good nurse," Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Sambit Patra told ANI.

Describing society as being increasingly self-centered, Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Barkha Shukla Singh told ANI, "It is not only a matter of law but the entire society must be responsible for cases like rape. The entire should is responsible as every people is self centered. Unless the society awakens it will be difficult to put a stop on it, how far will the law and police stop."

"Like it has been reported that she has been gangraped, her medical tests and her statements must be recorded. If she is not doing it then it must be probed and the Punjab police must look into all of this so that the truth comes out of it," she added.

The nurse was allegedly gang-raped by seven men in Budhlada town of Punjab's Mansa District on Monday.

The nurse has refused to undergo medical tests and record her statements before the police. Meanwhile, two of the accused in this case, Balwinder Singh Kala and Manwinder, have been arrested by the Punjab Police. The victim was also robbed of many valuable items, including jewellery, cash and other items.
