The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday wrote to Karnataka Police to register a defamation case against state's Urban Development Minister Haj R Roshan Baig for using foul language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP's Bengaluru unit on Saturday wrote to police and requested to register defamation case against Baig and demanded to punish him for the same.

A viral video purportedly shows Baig using unprintable language in Tamil while hitting out at Prime Minister Modi for banning the Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denomination notes late last year.

He was addressing the Tamil-speaking people of Pulakeshi Nagar in his Shivajinagar Constituency.

Baig's comments have heated up the political environment in the state, which is slated to go for polls in 2018 to elect 223 Members of Legislative Assembly.

The tenure of Karnataka Assembly ends on May 28, 2018.

Earlier, Karnataka BJP president B. S. Yeddyurappa demanded Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to sack Baig.

Congress, however, immediately distanced itself from Baig.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee working president Dinesh Gundu Rao called Minister's Baig's speech "condemnable".

"Speaking about anybody in such language, and more so, the PM is condemnable. We shouldn't lower the quality of political discourse," he tweeted.

After getting thumbs down from Congress, Baig later claimed that he was not aware of the meaning of the Tamil words he used.
