The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers celebrated the government's decision to confer Bharat Ratna to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Friday.
The BJP workers burst fire-crackers and displayed posters congratulating the former prime minister.
"The entire nation is happy, Lucknow is happy. Entire country is celebrating today as a festival. Atal ji is a great personality," said one of the party workers.
President Pranab Mukherjee presented the Bharat Ratna to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today at his residence in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present along with a host of VVIPs at the ceremony.
Various political leaders, including Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit, have welcomed the award of Bharat Ratna to the former prime minister.
