A new study has claimed that black men are twice as likely to suffer from prostate cancer as compared to white men.

The researchers said that it could help individuals better understand their risk of developing prostate cancer and help them make an informed decision about whether or not to have a prostate specific antigen test, the Mirror reported.

The study looked at both the lifetime risk of being diagnosed as well as dying from the disease for every major ethnic group.

According to the research, the estimated lifetime risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer is approximately 29.3 percent for black men, 13.3 percent for white men and 7.9 percent for Asian men.

However, the research did not reveal why there is an increased risk of prostate cancer in black men.

The study is published in the journal BMC Medicine.
