The Bombay High Court will hear the plea against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and others today in the matter of death of Dr. Deepak Amrapurkar, who died after falling in open manhole on August 29.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Bombay High Court seeking that the BMC be booked for causing death due to negligence after Amrapurkar slipped into an open manhole while wading through water-logged streets in the city.

The body of Amarapukar, who had gone missing on Tuesday following heavy rains in the megapolis, was recovered on Wednesday from a ditch near the Coast Guard office in central Mumbais Worli, the police said.

Amrapurkar was a gastroenterologist at the city-based Bombay hospital.

The PIL filed by the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association Mumbai also sought steps to ensure that such an incident is not repeated.

It claims that its purpose is to highlight and bring to the court's notice that the death of Dr. Amrapurkar was caused due to a gross negligence on part of the BMC.

Besides the BMC, the plea has the Maharashtra Chief Minister, the State Government, the police commissioner, the chief engineers, sewage operation and storm water drain departments as parties in the case.
