Responding to the massive floods in Tamil Nadu, CARE India plans to reach out to 7000 households with relief assistance in Chennai, Cuddalore and Kancheepuram.

Relief kits distribution has been initiated in Kancheepuram's Tirukazhukundrum district with aid already provided to 273 families.

CARE India has also begun relief work in some of the worst affected urban slums in Chennai including Burma Colony and Saidapet areas. Over 400 families from Burma colony have already received CARE relief distribution kits containing water cans of 20 litres, bed sheet and floor mats.

Commenting on some immediate concerns in relief work, Rajan Bahadur, MD and CEO, CARE India said, "Our teams have been monitoring the damage in some of the worst hit areas and will be reaching out to more than 35000 people with relief material."

"CARE and Inter Agency Group's assessment reveals that majority of the population has reported shelter, water, sanitation and food as the major impact areas followed by livelihoods. The worst affected are girls and women, particularly expecting women. There are chances of increase in water borne diseases due to continuous water stagnation and mixing of drinking water source with sewage," said Bahadur.

CARE India had already provided shelter and wash related non food items to 2500 people in Kumaratchi Block of Cuddalore, after the first wave of floods a couple of weeks ago.

CARE teams also distributed biscuits and clean drinking water during its on-ground assessment immediately after the flooding, to 341 marginalized and needy families in Kancheepuram district.
