Asserting that both Central and state governments have to fulfill their responsibilities in order ensure speedy justice to the common man, Chief Justice of India Tirath Singh Thakur on Sunday hoped for effective measures will be taken in this regard.

Justice Thakur told media, "Justice is one aspect in which both Central and state governments have major role to play and I hope that both of them will understand their duties and fulfill their responsibilities."

"I have clearly stated the concerns in the presence of the Prime Minister and Law Minister that the appointment of judges should be done as soon as possible so that the common man does not have to suffer more and we can give justice to them. An all round effort is needed, w are doing what we can and have requested the Government to their bit," he added.

Thakur further said his assertion on recruiting more judges has already been made by the Supreme Court bench and recognised by the Law commission.

"My statement was simple if you want to get work done quicker you must deploy more force. This observation is not just my observation the Law commission has also said the same thing, many judgments by the Supreme Court state the same thing. We all know that there is a grave need of increasing the number of judges," said CJI Thakur.

Speaking at the annual Chief Ministers and Chief Justices conference earlier in the day, the Chief Justice of India broke down several times while squarely blaming the Centre for stalling appointment of judges to the High Courts.

Thakur during his speech addressed directly at Prime Minister Modi, who was present on the dais, also blamed the Centre of doing nothing to increase the number of courts and judges in the country, thus denying justice to the poor man and under trial prisoners.
