China has dismissed Canadian allegations as "baseless" that an Ontario engineer had passed on its national shipbuilding strategy to Beijing.

Qing Quentin Huang was arrested on Saturday and charged with attempting to provide secret information to a foreign entity, the BBC reports.

However, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) did not reveal whether Huang had been successful in the alleged spying.

He faces a life sentence, and is due in court on Wednesday, the report added.

The RCMP said the information in question, included patrol ships, frigates, naval auxiliary vessels, scientific research vessels and ice breakers, and sharing of such information might give a tactical, military or competitive advantage to foreign entity by knowing the specifications of vessels responsible for defending Canadian waters and Canadian sovereignty.
