A security firm has said that a cyber threat group, which has been accused of more than a decade's worth of digital espionage and targeted attacks across Southeast Asia and India, may be Chinese.

The security firm FireEye said that the group's main aim was to seek "sensitive information" for government espionage. It also noted that the attacks were "regionally focused" in areas like, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Nepal, Singapore, and Indonesia, and targeted both government and commercial outlets, reported The Verge.

The findings were revealed in a report released by the security firm which also remarked that the attacks launched by the group showed its intimate knowledge of important military, economic, and political information about the targeted areas.

The report called the group APT30, where "APT" stood for "advanced persistent threat."

FireEye's CTO Bryce Boland said that all signs pointed towards China. The security firm added that the nature of the targets as well as a code base likely created by Chinese developers hinted at Chinese involvement.

The group has developed more than 200 versions of malware since 2005 and launched complex attacks on air-gapped networks, the report said.
