A nuclear power facility opening in China has been cancelled in response to the opposition by a majority of residents.

A planned facility to process nuclear fuel in Jiangmen of Guangdong province with an investment of up to 37 billion yuan was the first industrial park planned in South China for nuclear fuel production.

The Chinadaily.com reports that the 229-hectare Longwan Industrial Park project scheduled in Heshan would have featured facilities for uranium conversion, enrichment and manufacturing of nuclear fuel equipment.

According to the report, the project has been criticised by the local residents after a risk-stability assessment report about the industrial park was disclosed.

The residents protested on the streets being upset about the planned site being only 30 kilometers away from the heart of the city.
