A Chinese man has spent the past six years constructing a mountaintop cottage on top of a 26-story apartment building in Beijing.

According to the South China Morning Post, the house made by Professor Zhang Lin is completely illegal, as he never got the compulsory planning permission for the risky dwelling, the Huffington Post reported.

Another report by a UK publication states that Lin's neighbours are concerned that his construction is causing cracks, leaks and flooding in their own units downstairs.

The report further alleges that the building's residents have also called Lin a "menace" for causing too much noise each time he constructs.

Moreover, when Lin had purchased the huge penthouse that measures over 10,000-square-feet, he was allowed to build a villa with two-levels, but instead he built a fake rocky terrain, series of walkways and garden trellises.
